THE KING’S SPEECH 2026

Categories :

The King’s Speech is a formal event when the Monarch reads a speech to members of the nation’s legislature when a session is opened. The address sets forth the government’s priorities for its legislative agenda, for which the cooperation of the legislature is sought.

The Monarch: Crown, Robes, and “Dress Down” Days

The Traditional Look: Throughout the 20th century, the Monarch typically wore the Imperial State Crown and the Parliament Robe of State.

A Softer Approach (1960s-2010s): Designers like Norman Hartnell designed regal gowns for the Queen, including a notable Peau de Soie taffeta gown in 1967.

Modernizing the Crown: Due to the weight of the 2.5 lb Imperial State Crown, Queen Elizabeth II began wearing the lighter George IV State Diadem in 2019, with the heavier crown placed on a cushion beside her.

“Dressed-Down” Openings: On several occasions, the ceremony has been simplified. In 1939 (WWII) and 1974, 2017, and 2019 (following snap elections), the Queen wore day dress and a hat instead of full regalia.

King Charles III (2023-Present): In 2023, King Charles III brought back full traditional attire, wearing the Imperial State Crown, while Queen Camilla wore the George IV Diadem and a white embroidered gown by Bruce Oldfield, featuring subtle nods to her family.

Peers and Participants

Parliamentary Robes: Peers (Lords) wear traditional scarlet robes with white ermine fur trim, with the number of bars of ermine representing their rank (e.g., four for a Duke, two for a Baron).

Judges: Senior judges wear their traditional wigs and robes, a nod to their medieval origins as legal advisers to Parliament.

The Royal Bodyguard: The Yeoman of the Guard (“Beefeaters”) wear their distinctive scarlet uniforms and carry lanterns for their ceremonial search for gunpowder.

House of Commons: Members of the House of Commons typically wear regular business attire, contrasting with the ceremonial robes in the House of Lords.Key Evolutionary Shifts19th Century: State Openings were less common, and Queen Victoria often wore “widow’s weeds” or simplified mourning clothing.

2010s & 2020s: Modernity and comfort have played a larger role. The Queen replaced the traditional carriage with a car on several occasions and used a lift rather than stairs in 2016.

Symbolism of Modernity: In 2023, Queen Camilla honored Elizabeth II by wearing her Robe of State. The ceremony remains, as in 1446, a profound display of the monarchy and its place in British history.
